Healing from Social Contagion and Screen Addiction: A Session with Allie Duzett
Let’s be honest: most of us are addicted to our phones.
We already live in a kind of modern zombie apocalypse. People spend hours self-medicating with their devices, escaping into social media and other screens instead of being fully present. Who could blame us? The real world can be dull, stressful, or frustrating. It’s easy to seek comfort in the endless visual candy of images, videos, and content at our fingertips. With just a swipe or tap, we can explore, learn, and escape—but it comes with a hidden cost.
Humans are naturally prone to social contagion. This tendency has been part of our survival strategy for millennia: we pay attention to others, imitate behaviors, and strive to fit in because safety often comes from conformity. Our hormones and biology reward us for following the crowd.
Before social media, trends evolved slowly—sometimes over decades. I recently saw a video showing 500 years of haircuts, and some styles stayed popular for 30, 40, or even 50 years! Today, trends emerge almost overnight. Social media connects millions of people instantly, allowing those with the largest platforms to wield immense influence. While this power can be used positively, many wield it selfishly or inadvertently spread harmful ideas.
Modern problems often stem from screen addiction and social contagion. When parents get absorbed in social media, it can impact their children, families, and homes. Dopamine hits from scrolling can distract us from parenting, cleaning, or facing responsibilities we’d rather avoid.
This session is designed to help participants:
-
Heal from social contagion personally, understanding how trends and online influence affect us.
-
Manage screen time effectively, creating healthier boundaries for themselves and their children.
-
Protect children and families from the subtle, cumulative effects of electronics and social media influence.
By the end of this session, you’ll gain practical tools and energetic support to step away from screens effortlessly, reclaim your presence, and create a healthier family dynamic—while helping your children navigate the digital world with awareness and resilience.
